Most small business owners I meet are taking a shotgun approach to their social media. Something happens, they post about it, then go quiet for a fortnight because life got busy and the business had to wait its turn.
Sound familiar?
I hear versions of it constantly. "I'm just winging it." "I post when I remember." "I’m shit at social media, so I don’t really bother".
If you're running a business around school runs, packed lunches, client work, and a never-ending to-do list, none of that makes you bad at your job. Nobody handed you a system. That's all this is.
So here is mine.
It's called the 3Cs Method, and it sits underneath every piece of content I create, for my own business and for every client I work with. Clarity, Confidence, Consistency. Let me walk you through what each one means, and why the order is the whole point.
Clarity: the root of everything
Clarity is knowing what you want, what you offer, who you're offering it to, and how all of that shapes what you post.
Most people jump straight to "what should I post today?" when the question that actually helps is "what am I trying to achieve, and who am I talking to?" Answer that first, and the content gets so much easier to make. You stop staring at a blank screen. You start posting with a reason behind it.
This is the part people want to rush. It's also the part that changes everything. One of my recent workshop attendees told me her biggest shift was understanding why your goals need to shape what you post. That is clarity. Everything else grows from it.
Confidence: what clarity gives you
Once you know what you offer and who it's for, the wobble starts to settle.
Confidence is trusting that what you do is worth showing up for. It's knowing your offer is worth paying for and that the right people need it. When you're clear, you stop second-guessing every caption and every price. You post like you mean it, because you do.
I watch this happen all the time. The business owner, who was almost apologising for being in her own feed, starts talking about her work like the obvious solution it always was. The offer didn't change. Her clarity did.
Consistency: what makes it all stick
This is where consistency stops feeling like a chore.
Consistency is about more than how often you post. It's whether your message holds together, week after week. Your goals, your content, and the way you talk about your offer are all pulling in the same direction.
You can't stay consistent about a message you're unsure of, which is exactly why this one comes last. When you're clear and confident, showing up regularly gets easier, because you already know what you're saying and why. One attendee summed it up better than I could. She'd been posting whenever something happened, and realised consistency was doing far more for her business than the odd burst of activity ever had.
The Loop: why the 3Cs feed each other
Here's the part I love. The 3Cs aren't a straight line. They're a loop.
Clarity gives you confidence. Confidence makes you consistent. And consistency feeds your clarity, because when you show up regularly, you learn what lands, what your audience responds to, and what you want more of.
Round it goes, each one making the next one stronger.
How I use the 3Cs with my clients
This is the framework I run my own business on. Before anything goes out, I check it. Am I clear on the goal of this post? Am I confident in what I'm offering? Does it fit the story I've been telling? If it doesn't pass, it doesn't get posted.
I use the same method with clients, and we always start with clarity. I've never met someone whose content problem was really a "which filter" problem. It's almost always a clarity problem in a content costume.
Get the 3Cs in place, and the reactive posting stops. The "what do I even say today" panic settles. Your content starts doing a proper job, which is bringing in the right people and turning them into buyers.
Ready to build your own 3Cs?
That is exactly what we do at Content and Cocktails, my half-day workshop for small business owners in Kent.
We build your strategy together, in the room, mocktail in hand, so you walk out with a real plan instead of another vague intention to "be more consistent."
The next one is on Tuesday, 29 September 2026 at District KCL in Chatham, 9:30 to 2:00. Tickets are £47 per person.
